El origen de la ermita del Cristo de la Veracruz se remontan a 1212 con motivo de la victoria castellana en la baralla de las Navas de Tolosa. El rey Alfonso VII ordenó construir humilladeros y ermitas desde Tolosa a Toledo por el camino real en honor a la Cruz que le había dado proteccion durante la batalla, "la Veracruz".
En 1515, el templo se amplió, desapareció el humilladero y se convirtió en satuario, dedicado al apostol Santiago. Se encuentra presidiendo esta ermita el Santísimo Cristo de la Veracruz, en talla de madera con origen incierto pero que se piensa que puede remontarse al siglo XVI. Por la ancestral devoción habia esta imagen, se creó la cofradía de la Santa Cruz, que aprobó sus ordenanzas en 1613 para despues nombrarlo Patrono de Mora.
Junto a la ermita, encontramos un antiguo asilo conocido como Purísima Concepción y Santiago, fundado por las Terciarias Franciscanas de la Inmaculada Concepción en septiembre de 1892 gracias a la caridad de Maria Loreto Fernandez-Cabrera y Braulio Millas.
Hoy en día, continua apadrinando a los morachos y morachas, que celebran sus Ferias y Fiestas en su honor entre el 14 y el 20 de septiembre, siendo el día grande el 15.
Sanctuary of the “Santísimo Cristo de la Veracruz”
The origin of the Sanctuaty of the Santisimo Cristo de la Veracruz was the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, where the Kinf of Castilla, Alfonso VIII, won and ordered to build hermitages on the royal road between Toledo and Las Navas. First, it was dedicated to Santiago Apostle and there was a hospital destroyed in the War of the Comunidades .
The church has a rectangular floor flat, enlarged at its head when it became Asylum. The altarpiece presides over a wood carving of Cristo de la Veracruz, presumably from the end of the 17th century. Inside the hermitage, it is the headquarters of the brotherhood of Santa Veracruz. It has ordinances approved in 1613 and was a penitential brotherhood, with disciplinarians and brothers of light. The Cristo de la Veracruz is the patron saint of the town and its feast is celebrated on September 15. This day begins the Fair.
Next to the hermitage, there is an old asylum, now the residence of the Purísima Concepción and Santiago, a foundation governed by the Franciscan Tertiaries of the Immaculate Conception since September 1892. The charity action could be developed thanks to the generosity of the rich owners María Loreto Fernández - Cabrera Martín, and Braulio Millas Téllez.
